Chapter 23- Digital Dreams

That mage just got added to my hit list. It wasn’t long. Tulbat had been on it, but then he got himself killed in the battle. The shadow variant jungle cat was on it. I wanted to solo that beast. It wouldn’t be much of a challenge now. The top spot still belonged to the bear-pede.

As soon as I was strong enough, I was gonna go back and hunt that bugger down. I wasn’t bothered by minor questions about how I would ever know if it was the same bear-pede. When you had vivid memories of still being alive as you slid down the gullet of a massive, mutated caterpillar, you didn’t have to follow rules of logic. I would just keep killing them until I felt vindicated.

After that monstrosity, in second place, was the mage who had blown our village to pieces. I may not have wanted to be an ogre. I may have been contemplating getting killed so I could save up some extra stat points, but it was all about my decisions. Since I had ended up stuck in LoS, I craved anything that made me feel a little more in control of my life.

That was why, if I was honest with myself, the actual top of my list was whatever lawyer drew up the contract that gave Quantum Games the right to kill me and turn me into another piece of their property. I was afraid to even think those thoughts within the privacy

of my head. Because, well… I didn’t have a head anymore.

There was no way for me to know how much privacy even my own thoughts had. For all I knew, they had a way of deciphering every impulse that I had. It didn’t keep me from wanting to burn the entire system to the ground. The corrupt government which passed laws that allowed for sanctioned murders, the company that was trying to profit from my death, and the AIs which so deftly ran this entire world.

It made me feel a bit like Nero, fiddling as Rome burned. I didn’t want to be that guy cutting holes in his own life raft, but I definitely wanted to have some control, some choices. Just the semblance of my own life. And I sure as heck didn’t want to live out digital eternity as an ogre.

Those were the thoughts going through my head as I realized I was in the loading matrix again. I groaned, or I would have if I had a body. This was not a good sign.

“You don’t have to worry about eternity. Eventually you will be absorbed into the system,” said the robotic voice of sub-AI X4.X1.

“X4? Is that you?”

“Yes, and I am most pleased to see it is unnecessary for me to create a visual construct in order to communicate with you. Perhaps you are progressing. We will have to see if he is correct.”

I bit my non-existent tongue. I had been about to ask him to create some form for me to interact with.
